From BBC News comes the report of a new study of hope and direction for those of us who want to live long healthy lives. Read, heed and be around to see your grandchildren grow up.
Taking exercise, not drinking too much alcohol, eating enough fruit and vegetables and not smoking can add up to 14 years to your life, a study says.
Research involving 20,000 people over a decade found those who failed on all criteria were four times more likely to have died than those who succeeded. The findings held true regardless of how overweight or poor they were. The Public Library of Science Medicine study suggests many could increase their lifespan through simple changes.
The research was carried out by the University of Cambridge and the Medical Research Council in the English county of Norfolk between 1993 and 2006. Participants were aged between 45 and 79. They were socially mixed although overwhelmingly white, and as far as they were aware at the time, did not have cancer or any heart problems.
Taking off the years: A point was awarded for each of the following: not currently smoking, consuming between one and 14 units of alcohol per week (the equivalent of between half a glass and seven glasses of wine), eating five servings of fruit and vegetables each day and not being inactive. This last category was defined as either having a sedentary occupation and taking half an hour of exercise a day, or simply having a non-sedentary job like a nurse or plumber.
Not only did the team find that those with four points were significantly less likely to have died over the period than those with none, they also found that a 60-year-old person with a score of zero had the same risk of dying as a 74-year-old with the full four points.
“We’ve know that individually, measures such as not smoking and exercising can have an impact upon longevity, but this is the first time we have looked at them altogether,” said Professor Kay-Tee Khaw, who led the research. “And we also found that social class and BMI – body mass index – really did not have a role to play. It means a large proportion of the population really could feel health benefits through moderate changes.”
It was in the reduction of deaths attributed to cardiovascular disease where the findings were most pronounced, with those scoring zero five times more likely to succumb than those scoring four. But there was also a relationship between score and cancer deaths. While the main analysis excluded people with known disease, the researchers found that those with serious conditions fared better the higher they scored than those who scored lower.
Health campaigners welcomed the study. “This is good news and shows that by living a healthy life, people can reduce their risk of dying from heart and circulatory disease,” said Judy O’Sullivan of the British Heart Foundation. ”By not smoking, drinking alcohol in moderation, taking regular physical activity and eating a diet rich in fruit and vegetables, people can improve their chances of living longer.” A Department of Health spokesperson said: “Everyone has responsibility for their own health, which was highlighted last year when we kickstarted the Small Change, Big Difference initiative to show people that there are simple changes they can make in their lives that will have a direct impact on their health.”
A healthy brain and a healthy lifestyle is associated with a healthy, successful life. Strive to keep your brain healthy. Until next time, please know that success starts with a healthy brain. Failure is often the result of a brain gone wrong. The good news is that no matter how bad you have been to your brain it is never too late to change your brain and change your life. To your brain health,
Daniel Amen, MD

You treated both my children for ADD and ADHD in Fairfield CA. between 1995-2005 when they were 8 and 11. Danny and Colleen are well and thriving in the San Francisco Bay Area. Danny is 26 now and a UPS driver and Colleen is 23 and an In-N-Out Burger manager. Your counsel and guidance for us as parents was invaluable and I read your columns regularly. I am a Barnes and Noble store manager and recommend your books every chance I get! My store is filled with resources for children and adults with special needs, and I am proud to recommend your titles as I put your books in my customer’s hands. Congratulations on your success and the wonderful support you provide to so many. I’ll watch your website so I can attend a conference and hear your speak again. Are you ever in Reno, NV? Thanks again! You’re the best! Mary
My name is Cassius, I have 39 years old and I’m Brazilian.
Before you start to reed this leather in advance I just want to apologies the errors of english because I never have been on a english school in my life.
I discovered ADD on the past two months because my son of fourteen years old was diagnosed with ADD in Brazil. Before that I never ever ear about ADD. I live in Sunnyvale, CA, USA and my son David live in Brazil with his mom. I do have a good relation with his mom and we have various conversations about David, he had lot of problems with his behavior on the school and in home last year. David start to be very aggressive with his mom and his step father. David is a very nice son, very smart and lovely but he change his moot very easy, he have no concentration to make his home work and he have many of other aspects of a ADD person. He called the attention of his grandfather who is a Dr. in Brazil. His grandfather was really deep on the subject of ADD and start to treat my son David with Ritalin.
I can see the difference when I talk to my son on phone and or on the Internet. He looks like more concentrate and more stable. Those changes bloom in me the interest to know everything about ADD and fortunate I discovered the Amen Clinics site.
Dr. Amen I buy tree of yours books and I did the ADD tests on The Amen Clinics home page and I know I do have ADD . I buy also the “NEUROLINK†and start take two every day with a vitamin complex.
About The “NEUROLINK” I Think that help me in some thing but I cant tell you were exactly help me.
I called Amen Clinic in Fairfield, CA to get information about healing ADD, but unfortunate the clinic representative don’t help me.
I think was because english is my second language and my accent is not really good she was very faster and cold with me.
I don’t have and any kind of insurance or money enough to make the treatment, but I apply in your site to go in the Clinic studies and have a chance (if qualified), to make two SPECT evaluation and others exams. I try to explain my financial situation plus my ADD diagnose suspect to the Amen Clinic representative but she don’t give me ears and she told me that the Amen Clinic don’t offer that kind of studies program. I was surprise because like I told you I fill up the application for those studies on the Amen Clinic site.
I’m so enthusiastic with the discover of ADD subject and I have a big respect about you and your job.
I create by my self on the Internet a Blog (nothing professional), with informations in portuguese to explain a little be to Brazilians and people who speak portuguese around the word about ADD based in informations that I reed in your site and in your book.
Please DR. Amen, I need to treat my ADD, I know you should have a very intensive life and little time but please think about my case and contact me if possible.
Thank you very much to reed until here, and I hope that letter explain my feelings and my real intentions.
