Typically doctors have a harder time seeking help. According to a 2008 Newsweek article, “The unsettling truth is that doctors have the highest rate of suicide of any profession. Every year, between 300 and 400 physicians take their own lives””roughly one a day. So why don’t depressed physicians seek treatment “¦ Because they worry — not without reason — that if they admit to a mental-health problem they could lose respect, referrals, income and even their licenses. Medicine is still very much a macho profession; physicians are supposed to be the strong ones who care for the sick, not the sick ones who need to be cared for.”
Military physicians are in a totally macho environment and may find it even harder to seek help. This is not an excuse for murder. Dr. Hasan had many other options. But a deranged mind often does not see them.
This month, my colleagues and I are publishing a new study on completed suicides in the Journal of Neuropsychiatry. We found significant brain abnormalities, especially low activity in an area of the prefrontal cortex, in people who later went on to kill themselves. In 2007 we published a study on murderers, who also had low prefrontal cortex activity. The brains of our suicide group, was worse than the murderer group.

DR Amen
NO, You are mistaken your Identity.
If your ancestors neverr been frpom Arabia, and only planted and grew-up an d Multiplied and breaded in LEBANON since BC hyears, then: Dr Daniel Amen is a PHYNICIAN.. and We the Ancient Egyptian, especially ThotmosesIII, hav e fought and made peace and traded for long time. Thanks to your Cedar of Lebanon helped us in many construction projects
Dr Amen, You are NOT an ARAB, You only speak ARABIC because it was imposed in place of your original local langiuage; Phynician…because a mentally derained Khalif imposed on your ancestors, as on my ancestors a Capital Punishment if we spoke our original s[ponanious Language, whether its your Phynician or our Coptic language.
Speaking Arabic does not make us Arabs. No Negative reflection on Arabs, they have their history and culture, BUT it is asserrtion of our History, the Civilization we create and our culture too. Deniel of our national origins is a Humanity Felonhy

Hmmm, you seem to think that Dr Nidal Hasan snapped ONLY because he was a depressed Psycologist , totally ignoring his beliefs. that is non scientific tells me you are in a popularity contest.
islam has even blinded Psycologist.. there are more forces at play here, there is a hell, demonic forces, sin, a heaven that gives healthy brain health with hope, Jesus who died for sins of those who believe in Him ( again healty brain health, does away with guilt which psychology cannot explain or treat ).

I had the good fortune to discover your work and hear you speak shortly after I was dx’d with pts while working in the public funded behavioral health system in a large city 14 years ago. At that time we didn’t know how to treat pts…today we do. I was determined to find answers for my own healing and have followed your research on spect scans and the research on energy psychology and the treatment of pts. Today I am living, breathing proof of recovery and healing from pts.
How can our military be so far behind the times?

Imagine This: Our Military is Reshaping Mental Health Care
Belleruth Naparstek, LISW, BCD
Never once did I imagine taking my pain out on others…why would I pass it on? Your work and Ms. Naparstek’s work gave me key pieces for taking back my life and health.
Thankyou once again.
Dear Dr. Amen,
Your opinion about Dr. Hasan assumes that Hasan was suffering from some brain malfunction that caused his derangement. This is not true. Hasan was fully competent about his actions after the it was over. He refused to talk to investigators. He demanded a lawyer.
He knew what he had done and he was actively seeking to defendend himself from the consequences of his actions. a deranged person, or insane person, acts without realizing the consequences for his actions. He does not know right from wrong. Hasan’s actions after the fact prove he was and is fully aware of what he did and that he would be prosecuted for it. He is not and was not deranged. He simply bought into the muslim Jihad aspect of the muslim religion. He choose to pursue it over a long period of time. He simply carried out the terrorist mandate of what he choose to become. Therefore, You need to stop trying to inject a medical disability into this man’s motivations for murdering those people. Hasan shouted out a terrorist attack phrase that jihad terrorists shout out when they carry out their jihad terrorist acts. He simply choose to become a jihad terrorist. He carried out a terrorist act. he murdered 13 innocent people and wounded 38 others. He should be tried and convicted and executed accordingly. There are moral penalties for murder unless the person is legally insane. Hasan’s after the fact actions prove he was not insane at the time of the attack and he is not insane now. He is competent and wants a lawyer. You can bet Hasan is looking for something to use to shift the blame for his actions to anything that might get him off from the consequences of the murders he committed. I’ll bet that Hasan’s prefrontal cortex functions of his brain are working in over drive right now tring to figure out how he can avoid the death penalty!!!!
For a very long time we have known that the incidence of violent behaviors is higher among the “normals” than the “mentally ill”…the DSM-IV, to my knowledge does not designate a dx code to violence, per se. And yet, when someone with a dx commits murder the news is full of how we should legislate gun control laws for the “mentally ill”. And every day in this wonderful country we continue to exclude, overlook, refuse to hire, fire if “discovered” those with dx’d chemical brain imbalances…even those actively in recovery and healing. Some are allowed to draw disability pay, many are not and we remain taxpaying, hard working, taking personal responsibility citizens.
Just read that Dr. Hasan was educated at taxpayers expense and his compensation from our military (taxpayers again) was around $92, 0000. Sounds as tho’this was not only a lousy investment but a less than responsible one as well.
“The Soloist”…excellent! Glenn Close…yea! Time to wake up, folks!
