More than 100,000 new cases of cancer each year are caused by obesity, according to a report from the American Institute for Cancer Research. In the large-scale study, researchers analyzed data on seven types of cancer and calculated the number of cases caused by excess body fat.
Number of cases of the following types of cancer caused by obesity per year:
“¢Breast cancer: 33,000 cases (17 percent of all breast cancer cases)
“¢Endometrial cancer: 20,700 cases (49 percent of all endometrial cancer cases)
“¢Kidney cancer: 13,900 cases (24 percent of all kidney cancer cases)
“¢Colorectal cancer: 13,200 cases (9 percent of all colorectal cancer cases)
“¢Pancreatic cancer: 11,900 cases (28 percent of all pancreatic cancer cases)
“¢Esophageal cancer: 5,800 cases (35 percent of all esophogeal cancer cases)
“¢Gallbladder cancer: 2,000 cases (21 percent of all gallbladder cancer cases)
According to one of the researchers, obesity does more harm than just increasing the risk for cancer. It also lowers survival rates and makes treatment more difficult.
This is alarming news considering that two-thirds of Americans are overweight and the incidence of obesity in our children is skyrocketing “” increasing over 800 percent since 1982.
Being overweight increases your risk for depression, suicide in teenagers, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, and diabetes.
Plus, researchers have found that over time as your weight goes up, the actual physical size of your brain goes down. And when it comes to your brain “¦ SIZE MATTERS!
What I take away from this new report is that you can decrease your risk for cancer and other diseases by shedding the excess body fat.
In my upcoming book Change Your Brain, Change Your Body (available February 2010) I describe five types of overeaters based on brain patterns and offer targeted treatments so you can change your brain and finally lose the weight and keep it off.
