Neuroscience and the Law

This week I was interviewed on NPR’s program Justice Talking with Margo Adler, granddaughter of famous psychiatrist Alfred Adler.   You can listen to the program at http://justicetalking.org/viewprogram.asp?progID=643.

It is a fascinating, balanced look at the use of neuroimaging in the legal system, as well as using brain scans in clinical practice.

Until next time, please know that success starts with a healthy brain.   Failure is often the result of a brain gone wrong.   The good news is that no matter how bad you have been to your brain it is never too late to change your brain and change your life.    To your brain health,

Daniel Amen, MD

It would be considerably beneficial for the AMEN clinin to image the brain of someone under the influence of the sleeping pill AMBIEN while they are sleep-walking, sleep-driving, or seep-eating.

There are countless stories and legal battles concerning this sleeping pill. I, for one, am defending myself on a DUI because I was sleep-driving under the influence of AMBIEN.

The future of this drug is ambiguous at best. I personally know of a suicide blamed on the drug, as well. I would love to assist you in your research.

Dear Dr. Amen,
I know that this is on a different topic but did not know how to address my question to you. Do you brain scan Tourettes Syndrome? Do you have any information on it (and marriage) and genetics? thank-you. Is it inherited if someone’s father showed the same symptoms during his life. Are these brain studied after death for more information if they are not cremated? Thank-you. I just read a book by Commins.

Dear Dr. Amen,

I also had major problems with Ambien in late 2005. Is there a national study of Ambien available to you and/or the public? Can you post a brain scan of a person using the drug?

The Manufacturer of Ambien sent out a letter in early 2006 highlighting the ill effects of the drug then they started recommending Ambien XR or CR or whatever they call it.

Thank you for any information. I have severe ADHD and am curious.

Regarding Ambien; I was on iy for a short time. And all I can say about it , that it truly is a drug that should never be used by anyone. Well maybe some one who is chained to their bed. And that is to keep them safe from hurting oneself and/or other. And that would be used only if their live depended on getting sleep. And even chained to their bed, I believe some one should be sleeping in a bed next to them. Trust me I could tell you stories about some of my actions after taking Ambien. As an example: I took Ambien and thought I had gone to sleep. But upon waking on noticed a skirt and top on the chair next to my bed. I wondered ‘what is that doing there’. hen part of a memory came back to me. I went in my closet and put on that outfit and went upstairs ande remember knocking on my x-boyfriends door. That is all I remember!!! Except that a note was left on my kitchen tabled, telling me, Thank you for a wonderful night. To bad I can’t remember just how wonderful it was. Plus I do want to say, that I never wanted anything yo do with him, after we had stopped seeing each other. I can’t tell you anything else as I have no member of it. But I did stop taking it soon after that.

Can the spect scan differentiate between lyme disease and tourettes/ocd and autism spectrum. My daughter has tourettes and autism spectrum and there is some suspicions that lyme disease may be linked to the symptoms

Do you recommend some of your supplements that affect dopamine for the treatment of Tourettes in children?
