I am so confused about Maltodextrin! It is in my Stevia that I have been using to sweeten my tea and cereal, and I don’t know if it’s bad or not. Please fill me in when you can. I just started going sugar free two day ago.
Thank you,
Nina

Dr. Amen,

I am looking for accurate information on whether or not herbal supplements such as kava kava and St. John’s Wart have adverse effects on pharmaceutical antidepressants like Lexapro and Pristiq. My husband is on both drugs and he still struggles quite a lot from mood swings, irritability, and depression. Can you provide me any feedback or links to reputable resources?

Thank You,
Candi Overland

Dr. Amen- I really enjoy the valuable information provided in your emails. Regarding your reommendation of St. John’s wort, I have a question. I’ve read warnings from people indicating that one consistent side effect of the herb is that it greatly enhances the liver’s ability to process toxins (and, by association, prescription drugs that are procesed by the liver). These people have said that this can go as far as compromising the effectiveness of birth control pills! Are you familiar with any of this information? Is it maybe incorrect?

How can one break free from food addiction when feeling depressed, anxious and overwhelmed? I suffer from ADD, Depression and Anxiety. I have read your books on ADD and am currently reading your “Book, Change your Brain–Change your Life” and have ordered other hypnotherapy cds and your Brain Assessment test last week, since I cannot afford to get a SPECT scan. Do you have any other suggestions to break this self-destructive pattern I am in, as even with the books, cds, etc. I feel frozen and very stuck in terms of having any energy to change my life! I have developed Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol and am morbidly obese as a result of this compulsive food addiction–which has been the only way I have dealt with stress in my life for the past 20 years. The the worst part is I am now passing this pattern of coping to my child. Please help me.

After looking into possible explanations of what was happening with my 14 yo daughter. It appears that she has Type 2 ADD. I am so grateful to have some strategies to help her with school and home. So when I was doing research for her, I found that I am Type 1. It is just her and I and we live in chaos and quite frankly have hit a pretty hard wall recently. I am making changes to our diet and have started the supplements you have recommended. Luckily ours are the same. I was wondering how much time I must give this approach to see if it will work before we take the medication path. Thanks so much for your work…I truly no longer feel like I am crazy!

My grandson was diagnosed when he was younger (he is 17 now)with a nonverbal form of autism. Now he is having symptoms related to social interactions and relationships, as well as a problem with expressing his emotions, likes and dislikes. He doesn’t care about most anything. His father gets him to do some things (Eagle Scout merit badges, but he won’t get what the signature he needs to get his Eagle Scout and he did water polo for a season, but his coach saw he wasn’t really into it, getting a job to pay for gas, insurance, etc. for a car to get to school, etc.)His parents are trying to get rid of everything as far as chemicals in food, sugar, online and video games (which he thanked them for)and anything else that is causing the problem. He is not doing well in school because of a lack of interest. He is intelligent and he does try to express himself with me because I ask him lots of questions about what he has done and if he likes it (dancing, etc). He is really trying. He’s on Rx meds for now while on a “rule out” protocol. Both Mom and Dad are RN’s and trying to use natural foods and supplements to help their son. He is the oldest in a sib group of four, six feet tall and in good health physically.
What I need is the best sources for more information on the causes and treatment for this distressing condition.

Thank you for any information source you can provide. Just saw your link for “Autism” below….

Sir You must get a 1000 e-mails a day. Bless you for all the help you give the world! I’ll be quick. I am a 51 y/o F,Disabled Vet with PTSD,ADD,Addictions,Obesity ETC and more. All the ‘Usual suspects’ I live in Boston Area. How can I get a scan in my area? Life is frustrating because when I had all the testing for ADD and PTSD it was found that on many intelligence areas I was in the 97th-98th percentile. Yet my ability to focus/remember 28th percentile or ‘barely functional. Frustrating to say the least. Do you have any Dr’s in Boston who do your type of work? I wish for you Health, Wealth and Happiness for 2010! With gratitude and respect,
Debi Stanley debistanley@comcast.net

I recently completed 36 radiation treatments for breast cancer, including a partial masectomy and lymph node removals. I did this without missing any days of teaching, (my treatments were after school). Are there any supplements that I can take, that will give memore energy and help my concentration. I am taking tamoxfin, recommended by my dr. for fve years, and one of the side effects is cognigive impairment. Being a gifted teacher, I do not need cognitive impairment. I have met you at Eric Jensen’s conferences in San Diego and Newport Beach. I have all your books. OOPS, NOW I read the comment below. I will look through your books for suggestions.

I’m a normal weight 5′4″ 128 lbs. I’m constantly fighting hunger, especially when I get home from a non-stressful teacher specialist position. Once at home, I immediately want to eat, even though I have an apple on the way home. I eat whatever is left over or eat a big snack. For breakfast, I eat a cup of cooked steel-cut oats with milk and a fruit. For lunch, I have usually a good portion of chicken or fish with veggies and brown rice, plus salad dressing. I’m always fighting a strong urge to eat while I’m at home. I’m on Sertraline 50 mg and sometimes Trazone (50 mg) to sleep. Are these causing this strong urge to eat?…Luckily anything satisfies me. I’ve always had a strong appetite; now it’s super strong. When I crave crunchy foods, I eat 2-3 rice cakes or eat fruit, some almonds, or a cup of oatmeal for a snack at night, after dinner. I try to fill up with Good Earth Sweet and Spicy tea to stop further eating urges.

Thank you!

My 18 year-old-daughter- ADD, Oppositional, Eating Disorder, Depression, Anger, Substance Abuse-
and now, add pregnant to that list, with an alcoholic boyfriend. The last two years have been hell and I am so discouraged and so tired of tiptoeing around her so I don’t awaken the “monster”. If it weren’t for the pregnancy I would just ask her to go away (no, oh so tempting, but I can’t). We have spent so much time and money on medications, therapists, family counseling, programs of all sorts, etc. always thinking she would get better, but what has happened is we have just adjusted to her behavior, accommodated, because she can be wonderful, thoughtful, articulate, even pathetic, and because we love her so and she is ours. She is bright, she knows how to “do” therapy, but heaven help the person who crosses her. I can’t imagine how she can be a mother. She is so naive, so immature, so disorganized, so unable to learn from her mistakes, so sure she is right all the time, and such a horrible temper! I should have brought her to the Amen clinic for treatment years ago but I didn’t know what was going on. She was super sensitive, explosive and inflexible as a child. What can I do now?

Dr. Amen,
My Mom just had a shunt placed at 81 for hydrocephalus caused by head injury and traumas throughout her life. She was first DX with Alzheimer. Are her chances better to get back to the way she was after shunt placement? Or the long standing trauma suffered may affect her recovery in spite of the shunt?
Thank you for sharing your knowlwdge.
