Jeri E. Owens, MD
Psychiatrist
Dr. Owens is a native Californian, born in Richmond. His family moved to southern California at the beginning of his high school years. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences at U.C. Irvine. He, his wife, and two children went to Mexico to attend the Autonomous University of Guadalajara medical school. He completed his “fifth pathway”, an externship required of foreign medical school graduates, at Rutgers Medical School in New Jersey. Then it was back to California for internship at Long Beach Veterans Hospital, affiliated with U. C. Irvine Medical School. At this point in his career, he was undecided about whether he wanted to continue with residency in psychiatry, and where he wanted to practice medicine, so he took one year off and traveled looking for a rural location to practice in. He and his family ended up in a small town in rural Mendocino County, California. He practiced general medicine for four years, then entered residency in psychiatry at U.C. Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, which he completed in 1987. He has practiced psychiatry, inpatient, outpatient and consultation liaison since then. Although not trained in child psychiatry, he has acquired child psychiatry skills, and has treated children as well as adults for the past ten years.
