How do you know unless you look?

SPECT looks at blood flow and activity patterns. It looks at how your brain works. We typically obtain two scans on patients - one at rest and the other during concentration. The images below are examples of the various SPECT patterns associated with different disorders and brain types.

ANOXIA

Brain cells start dying within a few minutes of being without oxygen

Anoxia is a condition in which the brain is completely deprived of oxygen. Hypoxia occurs when the flow of oxygen is partially impaired. Both conditions are very serious—brain cells start dying within a few minutes of being without oxygen.

Anoxic and hypoxic brain injuries typically result in a period of unconsciousness or coma and can be caused by many different events, including, but not limited to:

  • Carbon monoxide exposure
  • Near drowning incidents
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Anesthesia problems
  • Untreated allergic reactions
  • Choking or strangulation

Lack of oxygen to the brain can cause symptoms ranging from mild to severe, affecting cognitive processes, memory and impulse control, as well as causing movement and sensory problems. At Amen Clinics, we’ve seen many patients suffering from anoxic or hypoxic brain injuries over the years and find the patterns of injury in the brain can vary depending on the type and severity of oxygen deprivation the patient incurred.

Case Study: Anoxia

This young woman had her first SPECT scan in 2009. Sadly, we scanned her two years later after she suffered an anoxic brain injury (she had stopped breathing for 10 minutes while very ill).
