Here is an email Dr. Amen received from a viewer “¦

“Dear Dr. Amen, I used methamphetamines daily for 12 years & tobacco for 25 years.   I saw your program and knew I didn’t want that brain so I threw out all of the dope and cigarettes.   I thought the withdrawal would be hell, but with the omega-3 supplements and the foods suggested in your program, it wasn’t that bad”¦You helped me turn my life around!!!   Thank you!!!”

“I had seen your presentation on channel 2. The things you said to do for your brain I had done most of my life. So, watching your presentation remind me to go back that way again. I don’t know what happen to redirect the way I live, but, Watching your presentation brought me back to earth.”

Congratulations on the success of your program on Public Television. I watched the entire show, and was very impressed””as well as entertained! Thanks for all you do to educate the public about brain health!

After seeing Dr. Amen’s PBS special, I was fascinated. After that, I read his book, and I decided to try some fish oil. 2 weeks later, and even while going through a very challenging time in my life, I have noticed that I feel much less depressed since taking the fish oil. Amazing! Thank you, Dr. Amen!

“I’d seen Dr. Amen’s special on PBS after which I purchased this book. I’ve always known that there was something about my personality that was in a sense "broken" and that I had some sort of learning disability, although that term hadn’t even been coined when I was a child. Dr. Amen has a great ability to put what is a complicated subject into very easily understood laymen’s terms and the personal stories of his patents were eye opening. The story of Jamie on page 139 so closely paralleled my family life, that I felt he had written about me. I was able to understand for the first time why I grew up the way I did, why my mother was the way she was and why to this day, I continue to struggle with certain aspects of my personality. I only wish that I’d known this information 30 years ago. However, I’m hopeful that this book will be the catalyst that I need to change MY brain in order to change my life. Keep up the good work, Dr. Amen!”

“A magnificent piece of work! Full of valuable information and exercises you can do to help yourself. I am a retired Clinical Psychologist and if I were still in practice I would give a copy of this book to all my patients!

Thank you Dr. Amen for a wonderful contribution to the mental health and
happiness of millions of people that will benefit from reading your book!
Whoever reads this, do yourself a favor and get a copy! You won’t regret it!!!!”

Dear Dr. Amen,

My hope is for you to understand the impact you have had on my life. Although we have never met, I give you full credit for the epiphany I experienced on June 06, 2008.

I am 43 years old, I started using cocaine when I was 19, (1984) I quit using coke and started using meth when I was 22 (1987). I continued to use meth until I went into treatment in 1991. I stayed clean for a year, but it was hard and I thought about it everyday. I actually stayed clean for 366 days because I was told by my NA sponsor I wouldn’t make it a year if I didn’t make some drastic changes. I showed her, like any good addict would. I got clean again in 1995 and stayed clean for about 11 months. In January 1995 I started using again until June 06, 2008, as I stated in the first e-mail I sent to your clinic.

I have been clean for 16 weeks, but this time is different. I had never been able to wrap my mind around the concept of “You have to do for yourself”; it wasn’t until I was clean for a month or so that I realized this time I am doing it for me. I want to have a brain that does more than keep me breathing when I am older, I want to live up to my potential, and quite honestly I have not been doing that for more than half my life.

The PBS special “Change Your Brain, Change Your Life” truly did help me to see that using drugs was preventing me from living up to my potential.

In 1997 I finally left my husband (also a drug user). I enrolled in a tech school and received a diploma in accounting (I had a 3.9 gpa.), consistently held a job, raised my son, helped my sister”˜s family considerably, all while using meth. No one in my family knew I was using drugs for the last 13 years, I was a functioning addict. I am not proud of that today I want you to understand my thought process at the time. It didn’t occur to me that my life was going nowhere because I was using drugs, I thought the only problem was the amount of money I spent on them and if I could make more money, my life would get better.

The point is your program helped me to see that using drugs was keeping me from living up to my potential, and most likely preventing me from being able to take care of myself in years to come.

I realize that my brain is not operating at its best yet and I know my thoughts are still a little scattered – However, in my defense, at age six (1971) I was diagnosed as “hyperactive” and prescribed Ritalin for a year, and I never did very well in English class. ““ but I believe that with time this will happen.

Thank you for your time. Thank you for your work. Thank you for your programs. Thank you for your PBS specials. Most of all, thank you for my life.

Sincerely,
Kelly
