What Is the Connection Between Your Brain & Skin?

What Is the Connection Between Your Brain and Skin

Did you know your skin’s condition may tell you the condition of your brain?

Skin, just like the brain, changes dramatically as we age. People age at different rates, according to:

• Inherited genes
• Environmental factors
• Diet
• Exercise
• Habits
• Hormones

Skin is the First Sign of Aging

Skin mirrors the first signs of aging, due to the hormonal decline in the body accompanying aging. Skin becomes thin, dry and pale in color, and it begins to form multiple fine wrinkles. As the skin goes, so goes the brain, because the brain is also being affected by the decline in hormones.

Cognitive decline can sometimes be attributed to hormone deficiency. But before jumping to replace hormones via hormone replacement therapy, be very diligent to discuss this carefully with an endocrinologist who is up on the latest research. The wrong hormones, at the wrong age, in the wrong doses, can actually increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

How to Use Natural Remedies to Balance Hormones

Using more natural ways to balance hormones, such as a healthy diet and exercise, along with supplements like fish oil, may be the safest route for most people to improve the quality of their brain and skin.

Skin aged prematurely by the sun shows deep wrinkling and develops many kinds of pigment changes. This “photo damage” triggers inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation is also seen in premature brain aging, such as in Alzheimer’s disease.

Why Do Skin & the Brain Age in Similar Ways?

There is a biological reason that skin and brain age in similar ways. In early embryo, both skin cells and brain cells develop from the same kind of embryonic tissue (ectoderm). It is not feasible to do a brain biopsy to assess aging of brain tissue, but a skin biopsy is simple. Researchers are finding that skin cells can provide an experimental model for aging research on the brain.

Perhaps not surprisingly, considering the brain-skin link, what is good for the brain is also great for the skin. Numerous scientific studies have confirmed fish oil is beneficial for the brain and the skin. It appears to help limit the damage of radiation from the sun, give skin a younger appearance and reduce the risk of skin cancer.

This is good news because it means that you possess the power to change your brain! There are many ways to become sick, but there is a clear path to wellness and it’s simpler than you think. If you are ready to transform your life, we can help you.

Improve Your Brain Health

While it may not be common practice to think of your brain aging the same way you think of your skin aging, it is an important aspect to keep in mind. The age of your brain matters! It is directly related to your memory, moods, and overall sense of well-being.

At Amen Clinics, we have spent decades helping people improve their brain health and cognitive function, effectively reversing the age of our patients’ brains. Call us today at 888-288-9834 or visit us online to schedule a visit.

  1. How much is the average visit at new York site. Is Dr. Amen there? Any health coverage accepted

  2. yes, your correlation sounds reasonable but I do have a question, my 93 year old friend has terrible skin and an absolutely remarkable brain. I am 25 years younger and as of today look like i shall surely lose my entire head of once thick curly hair and after years trying to clear Lyme from my system the brain works better than it did in the midst of Lyme but way below what it was. Does hair factor in along with skin.

  3. I believe you can submit the bill to your insurance company to see if they will reimburse you. Amen clinics will not directly bill the company. And I believe they will tell you up front the battery of tests, the costs and the recommendation to stay close to the clinic for a few days to get all the tests. I would call or email them.

  4. He is at one of the California sites but is not taking new patients. I was in Atlanta last week for the results of my Spect scan for baseline dementia. It was under $7000 for the full dementia analysis and worth every penny. Extensive blood work revealed my hormones were totally out of wack along with high mold in the blood and brain. Had my office tested yesterday for mold and it was unbelievable all the mold in my office. If you can afford it, go. Google Amen Clinics. You can set up an phone appointment with a doctor prior to your appointment to answer questions. $200 for hlf hour.

  14. I would love to come in for a brain scan at the Orange county office. I suffered from clinical depression for 25 years, abuse, PTSD, and rejection. I am so curious as to the state of my brain at this point. Plus, my hormones are horribly out of whack, as is evidenced in my skin.
But I fear I could never afford the visits. I too, have Blue Shield PPO. Is there a payment plan available?

  21. I’m in my 5th week of taking a five-year Rx for Arimedex following Stage 1 lumpectomy and 16 days of full breast radiation. I’m already experiencing mood swings, restless sleep & bruising…. my MO suggested an antidepressant. I would prefer not going that route.
I’m most concerned about the effects on my brain. Does Dr Amen have any comments about this protocol? or alternatives?

  28. Hi, I’m a patient and just started in March at the Orange County clinic. I initially decided to go for my son and offered the same to my daughter to be fair to them both as I knew it would be several thousand dollars each. While drawing out my retirement funds I thought heck why not do this myself, can’t hurt. MY goodness it turns out I needed this as much as my son (if not more) given my age and time left. If I could shout from the rooftop to everyone out there I would, I talk it up so much because I’m now filled with hope (after getting over the shock of diagnosis). Amen clinic worked with me insofaras I sought a discount for the three of us and yes they obliged. WHY OH WHY isn’t this mainstream health care is beyond me, it’s paramount for our longevity. Look at modern life, bombarded with fake foods, toxic air, toxic furniture, beds and mattresses, face and body creams loaded with chemicals and teeth from a few short years ago filled with mercury. Excuse me but WTF! I’m currently undergoing tests to identify the toxin that has essentially been eating away at my brain. No surprises there I suspect the mercury for sure and also testing for mold. To me I realize the 9800 dollars I spent on the THREE of us that could have been a new car in retirement matters not one bit compared to living well in retirement and being active, having a side job for income easily outways the cost….because the direction I was heading and care required long term would make those costs a drop in the ocean. Whoever is reading this don’t wait, run and get your appointment – if you somehow found Dr.Amen there is an angel on your shoulder who wants you well. I got sick with the flu at Christmas and found him on TedX best sick days I’ve ever had! Get Tanas cookbook too, she’s fab! Sincerely, Jeanne

  29. I agree Jeanne. I took my son to the clinic in Atlanta and am taking my daughter next week. I I have instituted a lot of his recommendations in our diet and am taking the recommended supplements along with exercise and brain health activities. If I could afford it, I would have all of my family have the scan. However, at the very least, we can all start eating , exercising and taking brain healthy supplements.

  37. I ordered dr amen video set. Haven’t had the chance to hear it all. It makes so much sense. I hadn’t known that he had an actual clinic. Brain scan sounds like something I would like to try.

Was wondering the cost. Also is it part of a plan that costs lots. Or is there just a brain scan. Also do you need to be injected with a dye before having the scan done? I’m nervous about the dye since people I know had a reaction to dyes injected before scans. I have lots of allergies with reactions. Not able to have colored dyes in food either ate there ways also they can treat me with out a brain scan?
Is the scan the first part of all treatments

    Sincerely,
    Nanci

  38. Texas: Dr. Johnson, Environmental doctor, just outside of Dallas, tests & treats mold illnesses. Even a simple deep nose swab provides a lot of results from what we are inhaling. He takes some insurances. There are docs who specialize in mold.good luck!

  39. I’ve been taking Arctic Sea by Forever Living Products (aloedori.flp.com) for the past 5 years. Product literature says it contains a critical balance of Omega 3 and 6 and is sourced out responsibly. At 58, I feel that my brain functions are much better than when I was in my university days! Plus, I don’t feel lethargic at all whenever I read books.
