Psychiatrist

Dr. Ian H. Rutkofsky, M.D. has long had an interest in Human Behavior, Heath, and Wellness. He graduated from The University of Texas at Dallas with a bachelor’s in Behavioral & Brain Science and Social Issues where he was involved in several research projects with the department of neuroscience and psychology. Upon graduation, he entered a post-baccalaureate pre-medical science program where he completed the program with honors. He graduated from the International American University College of Medicine and conducted his clinical clerkship in Atlanta, GA at Emory University Hospital, and WellStar Medical Centers. Following medical school, he attended the University of Arizona School of Medicine where he trained in Integrative Medicine under celebrity physician, Dr. Andrew Weil, MD. He completed a residency in General Psychiatry at Aventura Hospital, in Miami, FL where he was nominated as chief resident two times, serving for his final two years of residency. He also completed his intern residency in Primary Care with a focus on Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Emergency Medicine, and Neurology at Mercer University in Macon, GA.

Dr. Rutkofsky practices in his specialized fields of General Psychiatry, Neuropsychopharmacology, and Neuroimaging. He treats patients using a combination of medication and/or supplements and sees his patients in the Reston, VA clinic as well as remotely via telepsychiatry. He treats mood disorders including bipolar disorder and depression, personality disorders, psychotic disorders, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Attention Deficient Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), & Impulse Control Disorders. He also treats disorders of the nervous system including Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

Dr. Rutkofsky has been involved in many academic research projects and has published numerous book chapters and manuscripts in several prestigious journals, including The Oxford University Press and Advances in Mind-Body Medicine.  He is best known for his writings and contributions to Neuroscience, Emotional Trauma, and Dissociative Identity Disorder. Dr. Rutkofsky remains on faculty at the California Institute of Behavioral Neurosciences and Psychology where he educates many doctors from around the world on empirical methods used in medical research. Dr. Rutkofsky also enjoys volunteer work with the community, providing disaster relief efforts, and is an active FEMA participant and received certification from the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative. Dr. Rutkofsky is also an advocate for lifestyle medicine along with physical exercise and is a certified fitness specialist by the elite Cooper Institute.

He most recently co-authored a comprehensive textbook on Dissociative Identity Disorder, the disorder formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder. His book will be available in June 2023. The mission is to better understand complicated disorders stemming from emotional trauma.
