Richard Gottlieb, MD | Phoenix Metro Area

Adolescent & Adult Psychiatrist

Richard Gottlieb, M.D., Psy.D. is a board-certified psychiatrist and a psychoanalyst practicing in Scottsdale, Arizona since 1986. A transplant to Scottsdale from Long Island, N.Y. at age 11, Dr. Gottlieb developed a keen interest in both outer space (Astronomy) and inner space (the human mind). He once considered going into the Air Force but chose instead to pursue studies in both Psychology and Medicine. He graduated Arizona State University Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, the University of Arizona College of Medicine with a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), Harbor-UCLA’s psychiatry internship and residency, and the Southern California Psychoanalytic Institute with a Doctor of Psychology in Psychoanalysis (Psy.D.). He is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, on the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of the American Psychoanalytic Association and is President of the Southwest Psychoanalytic Society.

His philosophy of treatment is both Biopsychosocial (attentive to the internal and external forces that impinge on the mind/brain) and Psychoanalytic (attentive to how the interaction of nature and nurture during psychological development shapes the human mind and its problems). He considers himself to be a “life-long learner”.

He joined The Amen Clinics to focus more on the brain health model of treatment. Dr. Gottlieb and his wife have four adult children and two grandchildren. He enjoys travel, live theater, an active lifestyle  and socializing with friends.
