Dental Health Linked to Dementia Risk

Do you floss regularly?  Brush your teeth after every meal?  If you do, you might be preventing more than just cavities and gum disease.  A recent study found that people who keep their teeth and gums healthy with regular brushing may have a lower risk of developing dementia later in life.

Researchers at University of California that followed nearly 5,500 elderly people over an 18-year-period found that those who reported brushing their teeth less than once a day were up to 65 percent more likely to develop dementia than those who brushed daily.

“Not only does the state of your mind predict what kind of oral health habits you practice, it may be that your oral health habits influence whether or not you get dementia,” said Annlia Paganini-Hill, who led the study, published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

Inflammation stoked by gum disease-related bacteria is implicated in a host of conditions including heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

Some studies have also found that people with Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, have more gum disease-related bacteria in their brains than a person without Alzheimer’s, Paganini-Hill said.  It’s thought that gum disease bacteria might get into the brain, causing inflammation and brain damage, she said.

Paganini-Hill and her team followed 5,468 residents of a Californian retirement community from 1992 to 2010. Most people in the study were white, well-educated and relatively affluent.  When the study began, participants ranged in age from 52 to 105, with an average age of 81.

All were free of dementia at the outset, when they answered questions about their dental health habits, the condition of their teeth and whether they wore dentures.

When the researchers followed up 18 years later, they used interviews, medical records and in some cases death certificates to determine that 1,145 of the original group had been diagnosed with dementia.

Of 78 women who said they brushed their teeth less than once a day in 1992, 21 had dementia by 2010, or about one case per 3.7 women.

In comparison, among those who brushed at least once a day, closer to one in every 4.5 women developed dementia which translates to a 65-percent greater chance of dementia among those who brushed less than daily.

Among the men, the effect was less pronounced with about one in six irregular brushers developing the disease, making them 22 percent more likely to have dementia than those who brushed daily. Statistically, however, the effect was so small it could have been due to chance, the researchers said.

Paganini-Hill could only speculate on the reasons for the different outcomes among men and women. Perhaps women wear their dentures more often than men and visit the dentist more frequently.

The study has limitation.  Paganini-Hill and her team looked at behavior and tooth numbers as a kind of proxy for oral health and gum disease and didn’t carry out any dental exams.  While neglecting teeth might be a sign of early vulnerability to dementia, some other factors might be having an impact too.

Head injury and malnutrition are also important causes of tooth loss in adults, and either of those might increase the dementia risk, said Amber Watts, who studies dementia at the University of Kansas and wasn’t part of the study.

It’s probably a bit of a stretch to say that by brushing your teeth you will not develop Alzheimer’s disease, but certainly keeping a good dental hygiene regimen is never a bad idea.

    any insight on dupaytren’s contracture?

  • EJ from Michigan

I was just speaking with my best friend yesterday about brushing my teeth. I jokingly said to him, “I get then brushed at least once a day”. This is definitely motivation to brush twice a day and floss. My hope is that we will both live long enough to tell grandchildren about this study and the reason why Grandma has lived so long “Don’t forget to brush”! (Oh, just a point of clarity, I am 35).

Interesting indeed…all these studies on Alzheimer’s Disease. I have one in my files on research claiming that one cannot get Alzheimer’s unless they have MERCURY in their brain.. Of course that can go back to the teeth and mercury fillings; also those who eat a lot of the large fish from the ocean, as studies show the big ones have more mercury in their flesh.

What I just read about the link between oral health and dementia makes sense, I am a dentist who speaks about diabetes and oral health, when grand mother use to say ” healthy mouth healthy me” she was right. neglected gum disease can cause the bacteria to enter the blood stream and activate cells to produce inflammatory signals that have a destructive effect all over the body.
Thank you for posting the result of this important study, and please stay in touch with latest on that issue.

Thank you Dr. Amen for sharing this enlightening research study. I believe most health care professionals would agree that attention to oral health is essential, however, why does health care insurance treat it as if it were a completely seperate consideration? Many neglect proper care of gums and teeth because they can’t afford it.
    Sincerely,
    Leonard

This article is a perfect example of how a casual link can be misinterpreted by some to be as a causal link: especially when the reader is mis-guided by the headline. so, a D- to the author of the blog (Dr. Amen?) for the headline but an A+ for the disclaimers at the end of the review.

    Dr. Amen,
I am really interested in this idea of dental health and brain health. About 6 years ago I discovered that I had a very nasty bacterial infection in my jaw. It stemmed from an infected tooth. I had been telling my dentist for two years I had problems with this tooth but he would xray and tell me everything looked fine! I went back and insisted that I felt like I was getting an absess. He xrayed again and said, no he couldn’t see anything wrong! Two days later the absess broke and I had fluid leaking into my mouth! He had to acknowledge that something was indeed wrong. I developed lumps on my jaw and down my neck. He put me on antibiotics and finally sent me to an endodontist who discovered that I had a “cavitation” in my jaw from the bacterial infection. It was a hole the size of a nickle! He did oral surgery and scraped out the infectious spot. Again I was put on antibiotics for 10 days. It gradually healed and we were able to save my tooth after doing a root canal. I have since wondered if it would have been better to remove the whole tooth! The cavitation has healed but the root canal is still there. I have since read that these canals can still leak! The bacterial infection was an actinomyces infection. As the endodontist did the surgery he exclaimed that he knew exactly what it was because it was a fluorescent green! I have developed many autoimmune diseases since that time and am now on a gluten free diet. I still wonder about that actinomyces bacteria getting into my brain because the infection was so close to my brain and I had it for two years before getting it diagnosed! I forgot to say that originally I had a burn in my mouth and I tried to get my dentist to prescribe an antibiotic to clear it up and he refused! I think if it had been treated properly from the beginning this nasty infection wouldn’t have set in. That is in the past and the tooth seems to be doing ok now, but as I said I have developed autoimmune problems. I also have developed a vocal cord disorder called Spasmodic Dysphonia essential tremor. The specialists tell me they don’t know how it develops and there is no cure. They recommend botox injections in the vocal folds that have to be repeated every three months! They say that the disorder is actually in the basal ganglia of the brain and it affects neuro transmission of messages from the brain to the vocal cords. I am 64 years old and otherwise in good health. I have spent the past 4 years trying to do everything I can with diet and nutrition, but the vocal disorder persists. Any ideas? Could this bacteria have gotten into my brain, and if so what can I do about it? I have read your book Change Your Brain, Change Your Life which I found after a nasty fall that left me with a concussion and hematoma two years ago. So with bacterial infection and a concussion, I know that my chances of dementia and alzheimers increase dramatically. I take SAMe every day since reading your book and as I said am off wheat and try to limit sugar. I keep thinking this vocal disorder may have something to do with that nasty actinomyces infection in my jaw. Any ideas?

Maybe that’s what happened to me, too! I almost never too care of my teeth for decades. Now, not only can I not eat foods that I like and want and are naturally healthy, it took me almost a year to be able to write letters like this. My memory was fearfully bad, my motivation almost non-existent and my hope for recovery trashed. Scientific American magazine (which I strangly just read the article before I had mail for THIS site) has just put out an article regarding inflamation with depression. A drug that makes inflamation go away was able to fix 2 out of 3 sufferers of depression. That’s what I used to wonder about me. Heal the body and the body will heal me (or you). This is encouraging. All that I have to learn now Is how to cure and keep away any inflamation that wants to stay. And to learn it for more than a minute, I’ll have to find a way to remember it. Now that is the key for me, REMEMBERING IT. sgh

I’ve read there is also a link between high zinc levels and memory loss. Until it was quietly removed this year, zinc was an ingredient is almost every denture adhesive. Poor dental health would increase the need for dentures.

This was a nicely released manual. My family and i celebrated reviewing it considerably. There are so many stores using the net presently, hence so much info, it truly is hard to tell what on earth is genuine, and in addition what human beings only make-up. Exactly the same goes for diet regimes or any form of diet. I’ve truly read through quite a bit about hcg diet, and therefore am not certain things to understand out from the whole thing. It appears hcg shots may be the best alternative, nonetheless they look to be pricy, and you will have to obtain pharmacist or doctor. I will be asking you about the use of hcg drops, as long as these products actually work. You will discover true hcg drops, and in addition holistic hcg drops at your disposal internationally. Somebody can attain painless hcg drops over at Walmart at this moment. The diet program which experts state goes with hcg, seems like it is just a hunger diet when they say you take in as little as 525 calories on a daily basis. I would personally suspect that people young and old would be likely to shed unwanted pounds upon any diet system like this. Furthermore, they say that hcg makes it possible to be capable to stay on the diet program, and moreover triggers your whole body as a way to burn off somewhat more unwanted fat
