How The Amen Clinics Method Works

The Amen Clinics Method is a multi-modal approach to treatment that uncovers the root cause of your issues or challenges that are not discovered by traditional psychiatry. We believe it is critical to look at your brain within the context of your life, which includes  biological, psychological, social, and spiritual influences. See the full patient journey below.

Welcome

At Amen Clinics, we take the guesswork out of psychiatry. Getting to know as much as possible about you, your brain, and your overall health is the key to helping you get the answers you want and the solutions you deserve. Your healing journey will begin with a phone call from a member of our team, who will make sure you understand what to expect from the process.

Your Personal History

To help us learn more about you, you’ll meet with one of our trained Outcome Managers, who will ask about your symptoms and about 4 key areas of your life—Biological, Psychological, Social, and Spiritual—that may be contributing to those symptoms. This process is approximately 2 hours in length so that we can fully understand our patient’s needs. Your Amen Clinics physician will review this important information along with your scans and other assessments as part of your comprehensive evaluation.

Amen Clinics 4 Circles

  • Biological: We want to know about your genetics, overall health, diet, exercise, exposure to toxins, infections, or any history of brain injury.
  • Psychological: We want to know about your thinking patterns, past emotional trauma, and any significant developmental events in your life.
  • Social: We want to know about your relationships with friends and family, as well as the major stressors in your life.
  • Spiritual: We want to know why you want to get healthy, what’s important to you, and what gives you a sense of meaning or purpose in life.

Brain SPECT Imaging

Unlike traditional psychiatry that rarely looks at the organ it treats, we use brain SPECT imaging, which measures blood flow and activity in the brain to help us more accurately diagnose and treat your needs. A full evaluation includes two brain SPECT imaging studies. One study is done while at rest and the second after a concentration task is given. A highly trained scan technologist will guide you through the entire process and ensure you’re comfortable at all times.

Detailed Clinical Assessments

Additional brain mapping and neuropsychological testing is conducted to gain more information about how your brain is working, as well as diagnostic testing to look for biological issues that may be contributing to your symptoms. Each patient takes a web-based neuropsychological test called Total Brain, which measures your cognitive, emotional, and intellectual functioning. A variety of additional assessments may be recommended depending on your individual needs.

Detailed Clinical Assessment

  • QEEG is a diagnostic tool that measures electrical activity in the form of brainwave patterns that tell us how your brain is communicating.
  • Conner’s Continuous Performance Test-II helps us assess your focus, response speed, and impulse control.
  • Diagnostic lab tests to assess your physical health and to look for signs of chronic infections, hormonal imbalances, toxic exposure, or key genetic markers.
  • Irlen screening to detect Irlen Syndrome (a visual processing problem) is important for people with reading and learning difficulties, low motivation, anxiety, depression, decreased concentration, headaches, autism, and traumatic brain injury.

Meet With Your Doctor

Meeting with your Amen Clinics physician is an exciting part of your journey. Unlike primary care physicians who rush through brief appointments, our doctors spend ample time reviewing the results of your brain scans and clinical assessments, going over your detailed personal history, and dedicating one-on-one face time with you to give you a clear picture of your current brain health. During this meaningful meeting, you and your doctor can thoroughly discuss all of this valuable information, so you’ll get the answers you’ve been searching for. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask questions about your diagnosis and discuss your path to healing.

Comprehensive Treatment Plan

Your doctor will also provide you with a personalized treatment plan that is specific to your individual needs. Unlike traditional psychiatry, which often just prescribes pills to treat symptoms without addressing the root cause, we take a unique brain-body approach to treatment to heal the underlying issues that cause symptoms. We believe in using the least toxic, most effective solutions. However, when medication is necessary, it is prescribed as part of a complete treatment program. It is all customized to support your specific brain type.

Ongoing Follow-up

Think of us as your partner in lifelong brain health. About 2 to 4 weeks after your evaluation, you’ll have a follow-up appointment—either in-person, via phone, or video conference —when you and your doctor will discuss how well you are doing on your treatment program and address any remaining questions or concerns you may have. We are here for you to provide ongoing assistance with therapy, integrative medicine, medication, nutritional supplements, and more.

Happier You!

When you have a better brain, you have a better life—a better career, better grades, better relationships, better moods. It is that simple! Are you ready to change your brain and change your life?

The Answers You Want

Our comprehensive approach to mental health has shown that psychiatric conditions are not single or simple disorders. They all have multiple types, so the same treatment plan won’t work for everybody, and it could make your symptoms worse. The Amen Clinics Method is different. Our database, with over 200,000 brain scans, helps us more successfully identify various types of ADD, anxiety, depression, and many other mental health conditions, so you get the answers you’ve been looking for.
