4 Brain Warrior Tips To Sharpen Your Mental Productivity

Why does it seem like there are never enough hours in the day?

From day to night, work to family, personal goals, and endless to-do lists, we’re a nation of on-the-go people. We all want to be more productive, but that requires more focus and more energy. Below are four simple strategies that will give you the focus and energy you need all day— to get the important stuff done.

1. Get quality sleep

Quality sleep is key to a better quality of life. In fact, sleep is just as important as eating healthy and exercising. How you feel during the day is directly related to how well you slept the night before. Not feeling your best during the day and struggling to sleep are normally caused by your lifestyle choices or daily routine. Aim for 7-8 hours. Longer than 9 hours and you can feel even more tired. If you have trouble falling asleep, avoid electronic gadgets 2 hours before bed.

2. Hydrate

Dehydration is guaranteed to make you feel tired. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help you feel more focused and energized, maintain a healthy body weight and improve mental performance. Two great tips to stay hydrated:
• never leave the house without a bottle of water
• avoid drinks that dehydrate you such as alcohol and soda

3. Indulge in a piece of dark chocolate

Yes, chocolate does have caffeine, but it also contains healthy flavonoids found in cocoa, which have been shown to boost cognitive skills and improve mood. In one study, seniors who ate more dark chocolate had a lower incidence of dementia. Eating one piece of sugar-free dark chocolate a day can be good for you, boost blood flow to your brain, help your mood, and decrease anxiety.

4. Exercise

Exercise has been found to be as effective as antidepressant medication. Exercise is the quickest way to increase all of your feel-good neurotransmitters, especially serotonin. We recommend doing coordination exercises like table tennis, dance or martial arts to strengthen your cerebellum. This can improve your balance, processing speed, focus, and energy. The secret to exercise is to do something you love, then it’s not work.

Hi Dr. Aymen-I live with a hoarder. We are both late 70’s. Married 52 years. Both retired. . My problem is worrying a lot about things in the house from his hoarding and the need for a Gardner but my husband does not want to put out the money. Basically I just would like the know how to stop worrying about what isn’t being done and his messiness! Thanks Gretchen

I’m so glad I found your program on PBS. I can’t wait to receive your package I ordered on my local AZ pbs station. I just received a recent email saying it was backordered. So I’ve been watching all the podcast I can on YouTube. My dad lives in Illinois and was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s/Dementia. Thank you for your amazing insight.

Like everything from Amen Clinics, these are all excellent suggestions.

I would add one more, and that is to measure and improve the flexibility of your breathing ranges–how much your stomach, diaphragm area and chest expand when you take a deep breath. These three ranges determine how much oxygen your brain gets each day. This is critical as the brain uses 10X more oxygen than any other part of your body.

This may be even more important for women. While the average female brain is just 10% smaller than men’s, their lungs are 25% smaller and they take in 20% less oxygen with each breath. This reduction in oxygen intake can be made worse with tight bras and girdles. Their smaller oxygen intake may contribute to the higher depression and anxiety rates in females. Psychologists who tested a group of runners before and after we doubled their chest expansion found stunning reductions in abasement, defensiveness and deference and even bigger increases in self-esteem and self-confidence.

We have found that school backpacks can permanently reduce brain oxygen by overusing the muscles of the chest and stomach. One college student who was put on Ritalin when he was young went from making a C+ average in an entry level college to transferring to a full university where he graduated with straight A’s in two majors and two minors after we doubled his chest expansion from 2″ to 4″, which also increased his vital capacity from 3.22 liters to 4.3 liters. Families need to measure the breathing ranges of their children and find alternatives to carrying books and supplies with the breathing muscles.

Other activities we have found that reduce oxygen intake are bench presses, sit-ups, texting, video games, slouching, sports impacts, auto and bike accidents, yogic breathing and working bent over a desk for long hours.

Do you dx MS , treat it or have suggestions for a medical center to dx.

I am unsure if that might be what is going on with me . Worried but frankly afraid to be diagnosed and implications of going down that road.
